Apologies, AGAIN, for being remiss in my posting duties. Things have been quite crazy round here. We had so much fun at September’s Read It & Steep! As mentioned before we read Erin Morgenstern’s The Night Circus which turned out to be enjoyed by almost all of us and was the FIRST BOOK WE’VE ALL FINISHED!
Because the circus described in the book was so unique, we chose to bring some of the fun aspects of the book into our unique book club. Of course, food is one of the most important things at a circus and that can also be said of Read It & Steep. In addition to our tea offerings, there was a supply of hot chocolate. Kate made caramel covered apples; some plain, some with sprinkles, nuts, or chocolate chips … which was an epic fail, by the way. Also, there was a great part of the novel describing some of the spectacular food:
From page 195:
‘“Have you tried the cinnamon things?” Poppet asks. “They’re rather new. What are they called, Widge?”
“Fantastically delicious cinnamon things?” Widget says, shrugging. “I don’t think all of the new things have names yet.”
“I haven’t, but they sound good,” Bailey says.
“They are good,” Widget says. “Layers of pastry and cinnamon and sugar all rolled into a twist and covered in icing.”
“Wow,” Bailey says.
“Exactly,” Widget replies.’
So Kate also made a version of the “cinnamon whatnots,” which were definitely more successful than the sticky sticky apples. Delicious!
